A day in the life of... a dental student!

It sure has been a while, hasn’t it? I finally feel like I have the time to sit down and write a quality blog post. I apologize to the multitudes waiting with bated breath for this post.

I was fortunate enough to pass Part 1 of the National Board Dental Examinations in July. It is a huge relief to have that hurdle successfully behind me so that I can focus on my clinical skills. There is definitely room for improvement in all aspects!

After Boards ended, my classmates and I have been transitioning from the lecture halls into the simulation clinic where we are learning clinical procedures and honing in on our “inner dental skills.” It is amazingly motivating to think that in 7 short months I will be treating my first (live) patient! Here are a few pictures of things I’ve been working on since my last post.

 My first gold crown

Next time Dr. Evans makes you a temporary, remember this picture. I made 5 temporary crowns before I finally got one to work properly. There is serious skill involved when he successfully makes one of these bad boys on the first attempt. Practice makes perfect, right?

This is the final result when I finally got the temporary to work. Not bad, huh?

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF....
... a dental student.

Post 2: March 31, 2013

It is finally starting to feel like my classmates and I are in dental school. We have made it through the bulk of our D1 year didactic courses and have started the operative portion of our studies this week. Our operative course has taken us out of the classroom and into the sim lab. The sim lab is where dental students get the feel for their handpieces while working on mannequins. In recent weeks, I have learned how to place rubber dams, and create preparations for fillings. Working on the mannequin’s upper teeth was really difficult for me at first (because everything is upside down and backwards with a mirror) but I am slowly getting the hang of it. In addition to my operative class, we started pharmacology this week. I have always found drug mechanisms really interesting so I have enjoyed the class so far. Here are some recent pictures from my experiences in the sim clinic. If you’re interested in seeing more, follow me on Instagram!

Placing my first rubber dam. I instantly respect Dr. Evans for being able to places these so quickly - they're really difficult!

Here is a little taste of "indirect vision" or working in a mirror - see what I mean about being backwards?

Fluoride Varnish

A month ago our office switched fluoride from the rinse for adults and trays for kids to...
Fluoride Varnish!
We are loving using varnish because our patients LOVE IT!
It is great for both kids and adults!!

Fluoride Varnish is a highly concentrated form of fluoride that is applied to the tooth surface with a little brush.  The varnish adheres to the tooth surface for several hours and is more effective in preventing decay or treating hypersensitivity because of its adherent properties.

Anyone in our office can brush it on the teeth and the presence of saliva allows it to dry rapidly and set.  After application, you let it sit there until night time and then brush your teeth to remove the varnish.

Varnish is available in different flavors which is great for all ages.
Our patients love the caramel flavor.
It doesn't have the bitter taste of the fluoride rinse or trays.
Best of all the varnish does not cause nausea like the rinse and trays did!
Our patients are loving the varnish especially if they have a gag reflex.
Varnish does have a sticky consistency helping it to adhere to the tooth's surface.  This allows the fluoride to stay more in contact with the tooth, but the sticky feeling goes away within 5-10 minutes.

Switching to Fluoride Varnish has been a hit in our office due to its efficacy, ease of use (even on our 2 yr old patients whom it was difficult to do fluoride for before), and patients love how it doesn't cause nausea!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF....

.... a dental student

Post 1: February 6, 2013

I have been given the opportunity to begin a series on this blog about the life of dental student. By way of introduction, I am Dr. Evans’ son. After graduating from Olympus High School in Salt Lake, I moved to Provo to attend Brigham Young University. I decided early to pursue dentistry. I applied to numerous dental schools across the country. Following my graduation from BYU in April 2011, my wife Emily and I moved to Mesa, Arizona to attend the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health (ASDOH). To say the least, the past 6 months have been challenging and also exciting. ASDOH is a unique program that is an appendage of AT Still University based in Kirksville, MO.

My program emphasizes community service and reaching out to those who are less fortunate. This, among many others reasons, is why Emily and I decided to come here. The curriculum is also very unique. Instead of taking several classes simultaneously, we focus on one class at a time. There are pros and cons to each dental program, but I definitely consider this a positive. It allows you to master each subject and eliminates the dreaded “finals week.” Each class has a smaller amount of students than most schools in the country – I have 75 classmates, so we are a very close-knit group. On the other hand (the not-so-positive hand), we generally take 3-4 exams each week. Our class finals are generally first thing Monday morning and immediately following the exam our next class begins. This leaves us little to no down time. Regardless, we are happy and enjoying our time here.

I look forward to attempting to explain my bizarre life to those lucky enough to stumble upon this blog. If you have comments, concerns, complaints, etc. please direct them to my email: chrisevans9@me.com. Thanks for reading! Instagram

WISE  WORDS  FOR  A
HEALTHY  &  HAPPY  2013

Check out these tips from Health.com

11 Tips for a Healthier Smile

These days, it seems like everyone's obsessed with getting a blindingly white grill. But there's more to taking good care of your mouth than having a soap-star smile.
The condition of your teeth and gums is associated with a host of other health issues that involve your hormones and your heart, and your dental needs can change from decade to decade. Here's how to keep smiling strong at any age.

If you're pregnant, you might not feel like dragging yourself to the dentist, but you should do it. Higher levels of estrogen and particularly progesterone can result in puffy, tender gums that are vulnerable to minor infection.

Flossing is especially important, experts say, because it helps cut the risk of periodontitis, a more serious gum infection that can endanger more than your teeth: some studies have linked untreated periodontal disease to preterm and low-birth-weight babies.

Perfect your stroke
Many adults never learned how to brush and floss properly, says Irwin Smigel, DDS, president of the American Society for Dental Aesthetics. Use a soft brush that has rounded nylon bristles and make gentle circular motions at a 45-degree angle to your gum line.
If flossing hurts or makes your gums bleed, keep working at it. "The more you floss, the tougher your gums become," explains Paula Jones, DDS, immediate past president of the Academy of General Dentistry.

Kick those butts
"Smokers get periodontal disease at two to three times the rate of nonsmokers,” says Sally Cram, DDS, a periodontist in Washington, D.C., and a consumer adviser for the American Dental Association.

Smokers also don't heal as well after getting treatment for these gum infections. Need help quitting? Go to Health.com/smoking for tips and motivation.

Ditch the diet cola
Even sugar-free soda can destroy your pearly whites, thanks to the high acid content of most carbonated beverages. "Acid weakens enamel and makes it softer," Dr. Jones says. A fluoride rinse can help strengthen it.

 Book your appointment
No matter how busy you are, make time for the dentist because he can spot signs of serious illness that shouldn't be ignored. For example, gum disease can be a sign of uncontrolled diabetes.
Plus, oral cancer is more common after 40; your dentist will look for symptoms, such as unusual swelling or sores, as well as painless lesions.

Get off the daily grind
Grinding or clenching your teeth (which can intensify if you're stressed) can cause excessive wear and even cracking and chipping. "A lot of tooth wear starts to show up in the late 30s and 40s," Dr. Jones says. “Your dentist can see if you're grinding, because areas of the tooth enamel will be worn smooth."
If your teeth show these signs, your dentist can give you a mouth guard. Stress-management techniques can also help you keep from clenching.

Consider a renovation
Dental work you had done in your teens may need to be replaced. "If you've had lots of fillings or crowns, get them checked, because they do wear out," Dr. Cram says. A cracked or chipped filling can create a space for bacteria to collect, causing decay.

Beware of overbleaching
"Once you achieve the shade you want, you can touch up once or twice a year," Dr. Jones says. "Any more than that can be damaging." While evidence that bleaching erodes enamel is inconclusive, it may increase sensitivity. And the truth is, there's a limit to how much whitening you can achieve as you get older.

Bone loss is one of the main reasons people lose teeth, Dr. Smigel says. A healthy diet with enough calcium and vitamin D can help you maintain strong bones. And if you have a family history of osteoporosis or periodontal disease, dental checkups are a must.
"Dental X-rays can show the progression of osteoporosis," Dr. Jones says. If you do lose a tooth, try to get an implant, Dr. Smigel advises. "It stabilizes the jaw so the bone doesn't shrink and make your face look older."

Wet your whistle
Many medications (including antidepressants and heart or pain meds) can dry out your mouth, which ups the risk of tooth decay. If you have dry mouth, Dr. Jones recommends using a fluoride rinse at night, which can help protect the enamel. Drinking lots of water or chewing sugarless gum can also help.

Take heart
Studies show that people with periodontal disease may have higher risks of heart attack and stroke, possibly because the infection increases inflammation throughout the body.
"I can't say that you're going to have a heart attack if you don't take care of your teeth," Dr. Cram says. "But if you have a family history of heart disease or other heart disease risk factors, it's a good idea to pay extra attention to your oral health."
